The
town and county of Halifax are located in Eastern North
Carolina, and were the center of the wealthy plantation
society that was located along the Roanoke River Valley
during the Colonial period. This area was a hotbed of revolutionary
fervor during the years leading up to the Revolution, and
it was from here that the historic Halifax Resolves originated.
What were the Halifax Resolves? The Halifax
Resolves were the first official act by any of the thirteen
colonies calling for independence from Great Britain. Read
about them here.
We are a new Chapter, having been chartered on the 227th
anniversary of the signing of the Halifax Resolves, April
12, 2003, and are located in the town of Halifax, NC. We
are actively seeking to recruit qualified new members.
Membership in
the SAR is open to all men 18 or over who can prove lineal
descent from an ancestor who supported the War for American
Independence. If you think you qualify, or simply want more
information, please contact us. (Click on 'About Us' for
contact information for the officers
of the Chapter.) Click on the FAQ's link
for more information. More detailed information on application
procedures and membership requirements can be found in brochures
on the Forms link from the main
NCSSAR page (www.ncssar.com).
If you would like to contribute to your local community,
promote and protect the symbols of America, and recognize
your Revolutionary War ancestor who fought and sacrificed
in the cause of freedom, the SAR is the group for you. We
are a patriotic organization formed in 1889 and chartered
by the United States Congress in 1906, with more than 25,000
living members from all 50 states and 23 foreign countries.
Throughout its history, SAR has admitted more than 155,000
members. Among them are 16 Presidents of the United States,
including George W. Bush and his father George H. W. Bush,
Jimmy Carter, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Harry Truman and Theodore
Roosevelt. SAR also has had among its members Sir Winston
Churchill and King Juan Carlos I of Spain, both of whom
trace their ancestry to Revolutionary War patriots. Click
on the Background link for more
information on the SAR.
One activity we engage in is that of sponsoring ceremonies
to commemorate important Revolutionary War Patriots and
events. Each year on the Saturday closest to April 12th
(the date the Resolves were signed) we sponsor a commemorative
ceremony on the site of the old colonial courthouse in Halifax
(the Resolves were first read to the public from the steps
of the courthouse) which features speakers, color
guards and other activities that commemorate the important
role of Halifax, NC in our nation's history. Click
on the 'Events' link for pictures of previous Halifax Day
celebrations.
Some of the other activities we participate in are:
- marking
the graves of SAR members and Revolutionary War heroes
- scholarships
to JROTC members and Eagle Scouts
- recognition
of local law enforcement officers whose services have
gone above and beyond the call of duty
- recognition
of outstanding high school students with the Good Citizenship
Award
- sponsorship
of Boy Scout troops
- educational
programs in the schools regarding the American Flag, the
Revolution, and patriotism
