1. The annual
meeting was called to order by President Compatriot LTC Joe E. Harris, Jr. USA,
Ret., at 1430 hours. The Colors under command of Compatriot Larry Brown,
Nathanial Greene Chapter were presented.
The invocation was given by The Rev. Compatriot Dr. A. Clark Wiser.
President Harris led Compatriots in the pledge of allegiance and the SAR
pledge.
2. Greetings
were received by the President of the Nathanial Greene Chapter Compatriot John
Sullivan who indicated that the chapter was glad that all Compatriots came and
supported the SAR and that continued emphasis on the youth should be
maintained. Greetings were received by the Vice President General Greg
O’Hanissian who spoke later, the President of NCSSR Compatriot LTC Frank
Horton, USA, Ret and by the Secretary General NSSAR Captain Bruce Wilcox, USN,
Ret.
3. Gifts were
presented and received by the President as follows:
a. President
Harris and wife, Lady Gail $100 in support of the 2007-2008 calendar project.
b. NCSSAR Sr.
VP Compatriot Dr. Sam Powell presented two gifts, $2000 from him and $3000 from
Compatriot Ken Ingraham.
c. Compatriot
Dr. Bill Holt $100 sponsorship for Feb. in the Calendar project.
d. Tracy
Chilton, the winner of the poster contest, presented $50. This was presented by
Compatriot Grady Hall on their behalf.
e. Compatriot Tim Berly the NCSSAR CAAH representative
reported that from 2003-2006, NC compatriots have contributed $18,082 (17 gifts
so far). The goal is $50 to $100 from each member of the State Society.
f. Larry Brown $116 in late registrations
g. Compatriot Hall presented $50 from the Salisbury
Chapter.
h. Compatriot John Robinson presented $1000 to the
CAAH from the Blued Ridge Chapter, NCSSAR.
4. The minutes
were approved by the members upon motion of Compatriot Dick Bishop 2nd
by Compatriot Dr. Bob Sprinkle.
5. Delegates were
elected to the congress as follows: Compatriot Sam Powell, Frank Horton, Grady
Hall, Steve Pittard, Clark Wiser, Jay Stobbs, C.D. Williams, Nat Clark, Jeff
Lambert, Bob Sprinkle, Mike Mathis, Bob Owens, John Thornhill, John Sullivan,
Stuart Dunaway, Kurt Van Tassel, Kin Patterson, and John Misenheimer upon
motion by John Thornhill 2nd by Jim Becker.
6. Compatriot
Harry Goodman presented the financial report which was approved upon motion by
Bob Sprinkle and 2nd by Compatriot Bill Snyder.
7. The Reverend
Dr. Clark Wiser then conducted a Memorial Service for those compatriots who
were called to see their ancestors during the past year. The president then
presented a special gift to Compatriots Williams and Clark for their support
during his administration.
8. The proposed by-law change which called for the
appointment of two additional area vice presidents was approved by the
membership. Since it came from committee as a recommendation a 2nd
was offered by Compatriot Ray Maxson.
9. The election of officers was next and the slate as
recommended by the Committee chairman Compatriot Grady Hall and published on
page 15 was approved. Compatriot
Thornhill as historian was inadvertently left off but added before the nominations
closed. Nominations ceased upon motion by Compatriot Dick bishop 2nd
by Compatriot Harry Goodman.
10. Compatriot
Horton made a motion at this point that the SAR support the CAR president
project with a contribution of $1000. The motion was 2nd by
Compatriot Hall and the membership approved.
11. The Sr. VP
then reported on the proposed area re-organization of counties. He then ask
Compatriot Jim Hill to explain the policy for the National Society to support
of $500 for the Oration Contest winner. The members voted to allow the $500 for
meals and lodging and travel to the National Congress. The motion was 2nd
by Compatriot Ray Maxson. Compatriot John Thornhill announced the update of the
State History and copies were provided to every member. Compatriot Thornhill
then described the Centennial medal and medallion. Only 100 medallions, 500 large medals and 750
miniature medals will be struck at a cost of $4,000. Recommendations were
sought for the color of the medal drape. Compatriot Powell then informed the
members of the status of the calendar project, indicating that more than two
sponsors will be accepted and that the only problem might be in the picture
selection. He also indicated that he needed input on events.
12. President
Harris then presented a gavel to the president of the General Francis Nash
Chapter for their re-start, and President Ellis Hamby the president of the
Yadkin Valley Chapter. Compatriot Avent will present the Gavel to Compatriot
Dailey of the General Washington Chapter.
13. Compatriot
Dr. Sprinkle then announced the Moravian grave marking on 9 July in
Winston-Salem. One of his ancestors will be honored at that time.
14. Compatriot
Grady Hall, National Trustee encouraged all to attend the leadership meetings
at Louisville and the National Congress.
15. VPG O’Hanesian then spoke and encouraged all to
attend the Buford ceremony on 26 May and the SC ball on 22 Dec. In addition he
announced the South Atlantic District meeting in FL during the FL convention.
16. Sec General
Wilcox then ask for continued support of the CAAH, and echoed Compatriot Hall
about attendance and participation in National events. He congratulated the
membership on the current convention and the conduct of business and also ask
that if any compatriot wanted to be placed on a certain committee to please let
him know.
17. The site of
the next annual meeting will be at Hickory, NC in 2008. The date has been
decided but was not announced at that time.
18. The meeting then closed
with the SAR Recessional and benediction given by Compatriot
Clark Wiser.
