The Joseph S. Rumbaugh Historical Oration Contest is open to all students attending home schools, public, parochial, or private high schools in North Carolina who are in their sophomore, junior or senior year of study during the contest year.

             The contest in North Carolina is sponsored by the North Carolina Society of the Sons of the American Revolution.  The winner of the NC contest will be awarded a $250 cash prize and certificate, and will be entered into the national contest, if they so desire. 

            The rules and prizes are the same as those described on the National Society website - with the exception that transportation and lodging expenses for the North Carolina winner to compete at the national SAR congress are not provided, and they must be borne by the contestant, however, the $250 NC award and the $200 award to all national contestants may be used to defray expenses.  The 2007 National Contest will be held in Williamsburg, Virginia on Sunday, July 8, 2007. 

    1.  The oration must be original of not less than five minutes or more than six minutes.  The subject  shall deal with an event, personality, or document pertaining to the Revolutionary War and show a  relationship to America today.  The oration must be essentially the same as the submitted manuscript.           Notes and props (including military uniforms) may not be used in the presentation.

    2.  Entries to the contest must be submitted before April 1, 2007 to the North Carolina Chairman:

        and must include: 

           -  a typed copy of the oration,
            -  a photograph and biographical sketch of the entrant,
            -  and the completed contestant entry form (Form B-Rev 7/06) 

    3.  The NC state level contest will be held on April 7th in Charlotte, NC at the UCUMC Fellowship Hall 
            (
3835 West W. T. Harris BLVD., Charlotte, NC). 

    4.  During the presentation of orations at chapter, state, or national contests, no applause is permitted until all orators have finished speaking.

    5.  During the contest, no private videotaping or flash picture taking will be allowed.

    6.  The judges will select the winners by the following criteria: 

            A. Composition;           B. Delivery;                  C. Significance; 
            D. History;                   and                               E. Time allocated for delivery.

   7.   The contestants must agree that the interpretation of rules and the decisions of the NSSAR and its judges shall govern without reservation.

    8.  At the National SAR Congress the NSSAR will furnish awards and give recognition to all orators  who participate in the national preliminary and final contests. 

   9.  The first place winner at the national level of the Joseph S. Rumbaugh Historical Oration Contest may not compete in its future competitions.

  10. The first place national winner is expected to attend the youth awards luncheon the day after the final competition.  The luncheon will be on Monday, July 9th.
