The day was resplendent with a bright sun, but cool enough to require jackets or a sweater.  The SAR, DAR, CAR, other Patriotic Organizations and the Descendants of William Lee Davidson gathered at Hopewell Presbyterian Church, a historic church in its own right, dating back to the Revolutionary War.  Here is buried General Davidson, hero of the Revolutionary War, but who was cut down very early in the fighting at Cowan's Ford in 1781.  The Patriots were badly outnumbered but managed to hold off the advancing army of the Earl, Lord Cornwallis for a few hours in order that Nathanael Greene and his American army could begin their long journey to the Dan river with a few hours head start.  On January 27th, 2007, those gathered at General Davidson's graveside honored the memory of that gallant stand on the Catawba River.
