It took about six years to come to fruition, but finally on August 11th, 2007, the Revolutionary War skirmish at Hart's Mill was officially recognized by the state of North Carolina. Stewart Dunaway, the Secretary of the Gen. Francis Nash Chapter, NCSSAR, successfully applied for and was granted permission to erect the historical marker. In a ceremony that was attended by members of the SAR, DAR, and CAR, Compatriot Dunaway read the following words in dedication:
"We the members of the General Francis Nash Chapter of the North Carolina Society of the Sons of the American Revolution dedicate this market in recognition of the battle that occurred here February 22, 1781. May this marker remind all who pass by of the devotion and dedication of all who have made our nation great and may we be humbled and encouraged by this marker to esteem and perpetuate these virtues with OUR lives."
