Crafted in 1775, shortly after the battles of Concord and Lexington in Massachussets, the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence was written in Charlotte, North Carolina and dispatached to Philadelphia by courier. Unfortunately, the original document and five copies were later destroyed by fire in 1800. Some say that it served as the template for the better-known Declaration of Independence crafted by Thomas Jefferson. The CAR, DAR, and SAR societies in North Carolina gathered to celebrate the document at the Memorial Gravesite of John Davidson, one of the original signers.
