The 233rd Anniversary Celebration of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence was especially eventful this year because of remarks made by a historian at the Halfax Resolves meeting earlier in the year, discounting the very existence of this important document. Dr. Sam Powell, President of the North Carolina Society of the Sons of the Revolution said he has reviewed the evidence and found it to be convincing. Equally convinced were the Patriotic organizations, reenactors, and patriotic Americans who gathered in the southern hills of North Carolina to celebrate the fruits of this drive for independence, and to honor the memory of Major John Davidson, a Revolutionry War Patriot who fought to win it.
