BOOK CONTAINS ROSTERS OF
NORTH
CAROLINA REVOLUTIONARY OFFICERS
A new book about North Carolinians who served as officers during the
Revolutionary War is now available from the state Office of Archives and
History. “Fortitude and Forbearance”: The North Carolina
Continental Line in the American Revolution, 1775-1783 will have appeal
for genealogists, local historians, and anyone interested in North
Carolina’s role in the American Revolution.
Published in cooperation with the Society of the Cincinnati, “Fortitude
and Forbearance” lists North Carolina Continental officers with a rank
of ensign or higher. The 325-page paperback book also includes North
Carolina officers who served in Continental units from other states.
Written by Lawrence E. Babits and Joshua B. Howard, “Fortitude
and Forbearance” contains a brief history of the North Carolina
Continental Line. The useful resource has rosters of officers of ten
regiments of North Carolina Continentals and brief biographical sketches of
each officer, showing their dates of service, promotions, battles fought in,
wounds, and other information.
Lawrence E. Babits received B.A. and M.A. degrees in anthropology
from the University of Maryland at College Park and a Ph.D. in anthropology
from Brown University in Newport, RI. Dr. Babits is the George Washington
Distinguished Professor of History in the Maritime Studies Program at East
Carolina University. Joshua B. Howard earned a B.A. degree in history from
Appalachian State University and an M.A. degree in maritime history from
East Carolina University. He is a Ph.D. candidate in history at Ohio State
University.
