PERSONAL:

     Born in Alamance County, North Carolina, Sam married Karen Gregory Powell from Annandale VA in 1975.  Karen is due to be elected Regent of the Battle of Alamance Chapter DAR in 2007.  They have a daughter Susan who is married to Thomas Davis and have a one year old granddaughter (Elizabeth Grace).  Sam and Karen have a son Chris who is an active SAR member and the current editor of the Alamance Battleground Chapter newsletter.   Chris is an Eagle Scout.  He graduated from Wingate University in 2006, and works with Sam in a real estate business in Burlington.

 

SAR:

     Sam has been a member of the Alamance Battleground Chapter SAR since 1998. He served as Chapter Newsletter Editor 2001-2005, Chapter V-President and Chapter President 2003-2005.  In 2004, he won the Carl F. Bessant award for best single sheet newsletter at National.  Sam developed an interest in the SAR while working to establish monuments for the Battle of Clapp’s Mill, Pyle’s Defeat, and the Battle of Lindley’s Mill.  The work done for the Battle of Clapp’s Mill resulted in a Certificate Of Achievement by the American Association of State and Local History.   The award was presented to the committee of pat Bailey, Rollin M Steele and Sam Powell in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. on September 07, 1995, for the discovery, research and interpretation of the Battle of Clapp’s Mill.  Sam is a George Washington Fellow.  His Patriot, Burwell Davis was a private in the NC 10th Regiment.

     Sam has attended ten Board of Manager’s Meetings, and seven Annual Conventions of the NCSSAR.  He has attended National Congress four times, and the National Leadership Meeting in Louisville five times.  At National, he currently serves on the Finance Budget and Investment Committee, the Congress Planning Committee, the ROTC/JROTC Committee, and the Strategic Planning Committee.

     At the State level, Sam served as Central District Vice President 2003-2005, and Senior Vice President 2005-2007.  During the past two years, he has served as chair of the awards, membership, historic sites, and 2011 National Congress and Centennial Planning committees.

 

EDUCATION:

     Sam earned the Eagle Scout, God and Country, and Order of the Arrow awards in scouting.  He

graduated in chemistry from the Virginia Military Institute in 1974, and opted for a 12 year reserve commission in the Army Medical Service Corps reaching the rank of Captain prior to honorable discharge.  He earned the Master of Science degree from Old Dominion University in 1976, and the Doctor of Philosophy degree in biochemistry from Loyola University of Chicago in 1982.  He held a postdoctoral position at Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem form 1982 to 1983, after which he moved back to his hometown of Burlington to work in the family business. 

 

BUSINESS INTERESTS:

      Dr. Powell is President of Powell Enterprises, a sole proprietorship engaged in industrial property development and management.  Powell Enterprises is located in the Enterprise Building, Suite 200, 1635 Nova Lane, Burlington, NC  27216-2104,  telephone (336) 227-3557.  

      Dr. Powell also currently serves on the Board of Directors of Carolina Biological Supply Company, Inc., a private company founded by his father in 1927, that supplies laboratory equipment and educational materials to schools.  He also serves as a Director of MEDTOX Scientific, Inc., traded on the NASDAQ National Market under the symbol “MTOX”.  Dr. Powell served as Chairman of The Board of the predecessor corporation Environmental Diagnostics, Inc., which was traded as “TOX” on the American Stock Exchange, from 1987 – 1994.          

 

OTHER INTERESTS:

       He is currently Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Alamance Community College.  He also serves as a member of the Burlington/Alamance Airport Authority, and Preservation North Carolina, Inc.  He is a past Chairman of local Red Cross and Hospice boards.  He was elected to the Burlington City Council 1985-1997, and elected to a seat on the Alamance County Commissioner board 1998-2002.  He is an active Rotarian and member of the First Presbyterian Church in Burlington.

 

HOBBIES:

Gardening, SCUBA diving, and flying.  Sam received his private pilot certificate in 1974, and has over 1,700 hours as pilot in command flying light weight single and twin engine aircraft.  He currently flies a Piper Cherokee 6.
