June 15, 2006

TO:  Vice Presidents, Officers, and Chapter Presidents

FROM:  President

SUBJECT:  Quarterly Progress Report and Summary, April through June, No. 5

A.  Progress of Stated Goals:

  1. Membership.  At 698 members (as of 31 May) the society faces an up hill climb to meet the objective of 775 members by year’s end.
  2. New Chapters.  There is much interest in a new Western Area chapter in, and around Elkin , NC (tri-counties of Surry, Yadkin, and Wilkes).  The provisional chapter in “Little” Washington , NC (Eastern Area) has met twice, and those members intend to present a petition to charter at the next BOM.  Elizabeth City, NC could become the center of another Eastern Area chapter before the end of the calendar year.  The General Francis Nash Chapter (Central Area) is scheduled to reactivate on June 18th in Chapel Hill , NC .
  3. Observances.  The 225th anniversary of the Surrender at Yorktown , VA will be a huge event.  This occurs on Thursday, October 19th (less than a full week after our fall BOM meeting).  Members of the Virginia Society highly recommend not delaying to reserve a room(s) in the Williamsburg area for those interested in attending.  In general the society was well represented, at Halifax Day (East), at Patriots’ Day (Central), and at Ramsour’s Mill (West), during the quarter.
  4. Fundraising.  At the midway of the 2006 Fundraising Project period, sales are steady, but more selling is required by all the leadership to maximize the return of our investment for use in 2011 – the society’s centennial celebration and host of the National Congress.  The project’s web site address is listed below as: http://www.ncssar.com/images/VirginiaLongRifle/LongRifle.html. Have you sold the four tickets you were issued?  Additional tickets are available upon request, and they are in the possession of Harry Goodman.
  5. Communication/Visits.  Last month the vice presidents and I conducted a telephone conference, and this form of communication could become standard practice between BOM meetings.  Currently we are researching to determine if the newsletter can be electronically mailed thereby reducing the cost of postage.
  6. National Society Activities.  Donations to the capital building campaign for the Center for Advancing America’s Heritage (CAAH) is a high priority.  Thanks to most chapters across the state, the society will soon be listed as a Special Friend/Society (SAR 1000 Contributor).  Individual pledges, and donations are necessary to begin construction of the CAAH.  These pledges/donations are deductible to fullest extent of the law.
  7. State/National Conventions.  The Raleigh Chapter is to be congratulated for hosting a fine state convention.  This is the fourth consecutive year the society has made money on its annual convention.  The National Congress meets July 8-12 in Dallas , Texas .  The society has 8 delegates registered to attend.

    B.  Period Summary.  The following positions need immediate fillers (volunteers needed).

Ø       Arthur M. and Berdena King Eagle Scout Scholarship coordinator (previous BSA experience is desired)

Ø       Junior ROTC and Senior ROTC Medals and Certificates coordinator (no experience required)

I wish to visit the Bethabara Chapter, and LTC John Phifer Chapter.  These should be scheduled through Central Area Vice President David Thompson.
